Auto Maintenance 101: What Is a Transmission?
Did you know that going to a
transmission repair shop for transmission maintenance every 3,000 miles can save you money and
make your car more reliable? As it turns out, the transmission is one
of the most important and expensive components under the hood of your
car. To learn more about what a transmission is and how one should be
maintained, read this article.
How a Transmission Works
The transmission is technically the most advanced component under the hood
of your car. It is designed to transmit power from the engine to the drive
axle, which in turn rotates the wheels and sets the vehicle into motion.
Transmissions have a range of gear ratios, which allows them to alter
the level of power and speed to the wheels. At low ranges, the transmission
offers enhanced power but less speed. But at high ranges, the transmission
reduces power but provides greater speed. This is how transmissions allow
for a range of vehicle speeds while reducing the load on the engine and
increasing fuel efficiency.
Types of Transmissions
There are two primary types of transmission: manual and automatic. The
manual transmission has a clutch that connects the transmission to the
engine via the clutch pedal, located next to the brake pedal. The automatic
transmission, on the other hand, has a torque convertor that shifts gears
automatically depending on the power input and speed of the vehicle. Some
modern vehicles have a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which
has an infinite range of gear ratios, or a dual-clutch automated transmission,
which has two clutches to reduce power loss during shifting.
Visit a car transmission repair shop every 3,000 miles to have the transmission
fluid and components inspected. If the fluid is dirty or running low,
it can cause transmission damage that requires expensive repairs.
